The Smog Stop understands the importance of ensuring salvaged or junked vehicles are in  a safe, roadworthy condition before they are reregistered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. In order to meet this requirement, a state-licensed Brake & Lamp Inspection Station like The Smog Stop must conduct a thorough exam of crucial components such as brakes and headlights. Upon successful completion of this brake and lamp inspection, we issue certificates which must be presented to the California DMV. This certificate is mandatory and must be presented to the DMV to lawfully revive the title of the vehicle

Brake Inspection

Brakes are a vital aspect of vehicle safety, and that’s why the DMV entrusts a limited number of auto repair shops to perform comprehensive inspections. At Smog and Safety Inspection, our skilled technicians are dedicated to assessing every facet of your car’s brake system. Our Brake Inspection checklist encompasses:
  • Brake pads or shoes: Must have a minimum thickness of 50% remaining.
  • Brake drums and rotors: Measurements must align with manufacturer specifications.
  • Braking hardware: Must be present, correctly installed, and in operational condition.
  • Hydraulic system: Should show no signs of leakage in the master cylinder, wheel cylinder, calipers, valves, lines, and connections.
  • Hoses: Must be devoid of visible cracks.
  • Warning lamps: Should illuminate when necessary.
  • Emergency brake: Must be capable of effectively holding the vehicle on a 6% grade.

If our inspection reveals any issues that must be resolved, Smog and Safety Inspection offers expert repairs to get your car back on the road and officially retitled.

Light and Lamp Inspection

Driving without properly functioning lamp equipment is illegal and poses significant safety risks for both the driver and other road users. That’s why the DMV mandates a thorough inspection of the vehicle’s lighting system by a licensed auto repair expert. At Smog and Safety Inspection, our Lamp Inspection checklist comprises:
  • Headlamps and tail lamps: Must illuminate correctly with all adjusting hardware in excellent working condition.
  • Lenses and reflectors: Must be intact without any cracks.
  • Headlamp aiming pads: Should not have any damage to the small points on the lamp glass.
  • Visibility: There should be no body damage that interferes with the visibility of the lighting equipment.

Additional Situations Requiring a Brake & Light / Lamp Inspection

While registering a salvaged vehicle is the primary reason for a Brake & Lamp Inspection from a licensed repair shop, there are other situations where the DMV might require or recommend an inspection:
  • Highway patrol citation: If a (Highway Patrol) officer identifies a defect on your vehicle that could pose a safety risk or create a hazardous situation for other drivers, you may receive a citation requiring you to address the issue promptly.
  • Purchasing a used vehicle: While the DMV doesn't mandate a Brake & Lamp Inspection for used vehicle purchases, many individuals opt to have one to verify that the used car they intend to buy is in sound mechanical condition
